In my capacity as the UK Director of Operations for One World Tours Limited, I am often asked all kinds of travel questions. I personally believe that when visiting a different country that you should be respectful of your hosts beliefs and customs. So with that in mind I have put together some useful tips and basic rules that should be observed when visiting Japan.

By far the best and most efficient way to travel is by train using the Japan Rail Travel Pass for foreigners. You will need to buy an exchange order before entering Japan as you can not buy it when you are there and travel agencies in your area will be able to tell you where you can get hold of one.

You have to be eligible for the pass so if you are visiting Japan for temporary sightseeing or are a Japanese national who lives permanently in a foreign country.

On arrival in Japan go to a Japan Rail Pass exchange office or a Travel Service Center which are located in major JR stations or airports. You will need to show your passport and the exchange order and tell them the day you want to start your travels.

This pass will enable to use Japan Rail Travel, JR ferries, and JR buses.

By purchasing a green -type Japanese Rail Pass it will enable you to use the green cars (first class) without additional charges.

The Japanese are very precise when it comes to common manners and I personally believe that as a foreigner it is important to be familiar with some of the basic rules.

When visiting a shrine or temple it is common sense that you should behave respectfully. This can be observed by making a short prayer in front a sacred object. You can also show respect by so by throwing a coin into the offering box, followed by a short prayer.

In some temples you can purchase a bundle of incense which you can burn. If you have an injury or medical problem it is believed that if you fan the smoke towards the injury that there is great healing properties in this.

Some temples may expect you to remove your shoes which you can leave at the entrance on the shelves provided or take them with you.

When visiting a shrine you are expected to be in good health to avoid bringing in any impurities. So before entering a shrine you are expected to cleanse both hands with the fresh water provided at the purification fountain. People will also rinse out their mouths with the fresh water, spitting it out by the fountain. This is not compulsory however.

You will be permitted to take photographs in the temple grounds but forbidden indoors there will be signs to let you know what is permitted.

Make sure that you have tissues when visiting a public toilet as there is not always toilet roll or hand drying facilities. There are western toilets and Japanese toilets in most places and wheelchair toilets were always in stations and temple areas.

The Japanese greet each other by bowing but since they do not expect foreigners to know proper Japanese bowing rules so a nod of the head is usually enough.

Older men sometimes use it on their face in working class establishments, but they are considered rude for doing so. Also, refrain from wiping your nose on it.

Here are a few table rules for you to be aware of when dining out. You will receive a hot towel at the start of a meal which can only be used for your hands as it is considered bad manners to use it on your face.

Blowing your nose in public is also considered bad manners especially if at the dining table.

The Japanese will consider an empty plate good manners but burping is not. When you have finished your meal try to remember to place all your dishes as they were at the start of the meal. Remembering to replace the lid of dishes and replacing your chopsticks on the chopstick holder. Speaking of chopsticks there are a whole lot of rules on how to use the effectively. I have narrowed them down to the basics here.

Do not stick chopsticks into your food, especially rice nor pass food with them directly to somebody else’s chopsticks. Do not use the chopsticks to spear food with. Spoons are sometimes used to eat Japanese dishes that are difficult to eat with chopsticks and knives and forks are only used for Western food.

5 What to take – Finally, here are a few things you may or nay not have thought of. Electric. If you need to bring any appliances from your country, make sure to bring a converter or plug. American appliances can be used in Japan without a converter although they will have less power. You will need a two-pronged plug and you will be able to buy converters and plugs in the airports. Better still buy one before you travel.

It is advisable to look for Citibank ATM’s when attempting to obtain money as most ATM’s in Japan do not accept international visa cards, etc. in their machines due to the fact that the magnetic strip on the back is much thinner than ours.

The yen is the Japanese currency unit. A MasterCard or VISA card can be used in department stores, hotels, and restaurants in major cities. If, however you are traveling the countryside of Japan, you might find that credit cards/traveler’s checks may not be accepted. While it is a good idea to carry Japanese currency with you, make sure that you remain alert in areas where pick-pockets may be rife such as crowded trains etc.

Last but by no means least to avoid any embarrassing moments when following the Japanese tradition of removing your shoes, make sure that your socks or tights have not got holes in them!

Have great holiday or vacation in Japan

Japan is one of the Asian cities that must be seen. It is simply breathtaking to behold in its scenery and full of fun and exciting things to experience. Many come to the Islands of Japan and find they have so much to do, it is impossible to pack it all in to one vacation. From the large amount of attractions, the rich colorful history, and the beauty of the land itself, there is something to appeal to every traveler. You can still see the past traditions mingled with the new ways of today.

There are so many cities in Japan that one might find it hard to decide on an exact destination. Each city has its own special personality to consider. Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka, and Fukuoka are some of the more polar cities most world travelers have heard of. Tokyo is the most up to date city in Japan and has sites to see such as the Meiji Jingu Shrine, the Imperial Palace, and Disneyland Tokyo.

Other sites around Japan include the Nijo Castle, The Golden Pavillion, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and The Museum Of Kyoto. Hiroshima is, in itself a historical place as it was the area to be destroyed because of the first atomic bomb. The list continues on and on of great places to see and great things to experience while here in Japan.

For those who want a more detailed list of thing you can do, the list below should give you a pretty good idea.

· Try meditating at one of the many Buddhist Temples in the area.

· See Sumo Warriors wrestle it out in this ancient sport.

· Be a part of a tea party which is tradition in Japan.

· For the adventure seeker, a climb up Mount Fuji might be the right activity.

· Smell the Cherry blossoms on the tree.

· Fish in one of the great waters here.

· Have some authentic sushi and wash it down with real sake.

· Take part in one of the many festival through the city.

There are too many great things to do on your vacation in Japan. The best thing to do is to plan in advance. But if you’re the adventuress type, you can simply buy your tickets and set off for your own personal experience to Japan. See what you can find to do in this magnificent area of the world.

A gem in the China Seas, Taiwan embodies a unique entangling of ancient and modern, East and West. From the bustling commercial center of the capital city, Taipei, to the cascading volcanic mountains of Yushan National Park, Taiwan offers the world traveler an unmatched experience. It is no coincidence that Portuguese explorers named this island ‘Ilha Formosa’, or the beautiful island.
To Travel to Taiwan is to Understand Diversity
Officially known as the Republic of China (R.O.C.), Taiwan should not be confused with the People’s Republic of China, which refers to mainland China. Within the past 200 years the island has been ruled by the Dutch, become part of Japan, has been “returned” to China and is currently striving to become an internationally recognized sovereign nation. Taiwan’s tumultuous and fascinating history of the Aboriginal, Taiwanese and Chinese people is revealed through the many cultural festivals held throughout the year. Travel to the island in February for the Taiwan Lantern Festival or in June to watch the world-famous Dragon Boat Races during the Dragon Boat Festival.
One of Taiwan’s most prominent cultural symbols is Taipei 101, the world’s tallest building, measuring 508 meters and 101 floors. Finished in 2003, the tower signifies Taiwan’s substantial economic growth from the periphery of the global economy to become one of the four Asian Tigers, as well as the government’s dedication to a democratic society separate from that of China. Tainan, the oldest and fourth largest city on the island, offers a more authentic and less commercialized window into Taiwanese culture. Temples and Memorial Arches define this city where the Ching Dynasty once prayed to the God of War.
The Taiwan Terrain: Recreation and Ecotourism
Exploration of the thriving urban centers is only one of many ways to get in touch with Taiwan. The rugged topography of Taiwan is adorned with magnificent peaks, lush valleys and dramatic waterfalls. Yushan National Park is home to the island’s tallest peak, Jade Mountain, which towers at 2,610 meters. Hike to the summit and take the more technical route down or simply enjoy the breathtaking view from the Tatachia Visitor Center, accessible directly from the new Central Cross-Island Highway. From Jade Mountain, descend deep into Taroko Gorge on Taiwan’s rocky and secluded east coast. This 12-mile-long canyon is home to the natural open-air Wenshan hot springs and the Atayal people, one of Taiwan’s remaining aboriginal tribes. The rocky cliffs at the canyon’s end are a starting point for those who wish to travel farther into Taiwan’s history. The surrounding Pacific Ocean is sprinkled with beautiful green islands that have unique native histories and are mostly accessible by plane or ferry. Most of the pristine and dramatic destinations are protected by Taiwan’s National Park Department, which offers an array of lodging and guiding services and has proven to be a well-organized resource for the outdoor sightseer.
From the island’s tallest building to its tallest peak, Taiwan has something exceptional to offer every kind traveler. Travel Taiwan’s thriving society and come face-to-face with an Asian Tiger.

For many individuals in the UK, an annual holiday is the highlight of the year. Whether it’s a one week beachside break in the Canary Islands or a two-week skiing trip to Japan, holidays can take months of careful planning and preparation. But if you suffer from a fear of flying or the thought of world travel simply raises your stress levels through the roof, it’s possible that your long-cherished trip could turn into a nightmare. So how exactly do you beat the perils of travel-related stress?

Essentially, much of the stress incurred by travelling has to do with simple worries, like missing your plane or forgetting vital documents, such as passports or travellers’ cheques. This is easy to conquer if you take positive action. Ensure you arrive at the airport well before you’re required to check-in, whether this means calling a taxi before you normally would or getting an earlier train. This way, you know for sure that there’s no chance of you being late, even if trains get cancelled or there’s traffic on the motorway.

Additionally, check you’ve got your travel documents before you leave home and keep them in a safe place where you’ll be able to keep track of them – for instance, a bum bag or a neck purse worn across your body, rather than a pocket which they might fall out of or be stolen. Once you’re at the airport, keep yourself busy: take an engrossing book with you, wander around the duty-free shops or engage your mind by working through a book of crosswords or sudoku puzzles. You’ll find that this will help you take your mind off any travel-related worries.

Many experts on stress also suggest altering your diet slightly the day before you fly and while you’re on your flight. On the day prior to flying, avoid eating rich or fatty foods, and try not to drink too much tea, coffee or alcohol – after all, there’s nothing worse than being hung-over when you’re fifty thousand feet high in the air!

Choosing a comprehensive travel insurance policy can also help you feel more at ease on your holiday, both when you’re flying and during your trip itself. For instance, if you’re anxious that your luggage might be mislaid or a delayed flight could result in you missing your connection, having the safety net of travel insurance ensures that you’re well covered if these events do happen.

The majority of travel-related stress, however, can be beaten simply by remaining calm and composed. Make sure you keep your head above water when travelling and, if adverse events do occur, simply tackle them one step at a time. As a result, you’ll find that your holiday will get off to a much more relaxing start – a trend that can only continue into your vacation.

Pod hotels are not a new phenomenon. They have been around for many years, but most travelers have never heard of them. They had their beginnings in Japan as “capsule hotels”, that were, and are still being used mainly by businessmen on stopovers. However, pod hotels are becoming more and more popular with vacation travelers as well, because they are convenient and cost less than regular hotels.

The pod hotel concept is only in its infancy in the United States and Europe, but is growing by leaps and bounds as more and more travelers want this unique service. Entrepreneurs are responding by creating small, pod-like hotel rooms that are normally rented by the hour, or number of hours.

Most pod hotel rooms are small, comfortable, and convenient, and they can have all the amenities of a standard hotel room at a fraction of the cost. They can be a very good choice for budget-conscious travelers and vacationers.

Some pod hotels are situated in airports such as the ones at Yotel.com, located in London, England’s Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.

EasyHotels.com have pod hotels in London, Zurich, Basal, and Budapest. GBIHotels.com have pod hotels located in Amsterdam and Antwerp. A New York pod hotel is the PickwickArms.com

There is a new innovation in pod hotels called Metronap Sleep Pods. These space age looking pods are showing up not only on concourses in airports, but in convenient locations in office buildings. They are great for tourists and business travelers, as well as tired people and executives that just want to have a little nap. Even though these sleep pods are located out in the open, they will partially enclose for privacy, but aren’t claustrophobic. They are also fitted with noise canceling headphones. They rent by the hour and are reasonably priced.

“What you’ve done becomes the judge of what you’re going to do – especially in other people’s minds. When you’re traveling, you are
what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road.” – William Least Heat Moon
I want to open your eyes a bit to the wonderful opportunities the world has to offer. Other than spending 8-plus hours a day in a tiny cubicle, slaving away at something you hate, there are scores of things that you can do to make money in exciting, adventurous ways.
For most of these jobs you don’t need to be young or physically fit. You don’t need to have special training, or training that is not easily acquired. You just need to realize that they’re there and go and get ‘em.
There are jobs that pay you to travel. There are jobs that give you free room and board. There are jobs that take you sailing, horse-back riding, mountain-hiking and to exotic islands. There are even jobs that pay you to dine at fancy restaurants.
There are a multitude of exciting, adventurous jobs that are available to you. You can literally pick and choose what excites you the most. And if in the rare case your dream-job doesn’t exist – you can create it.
Did you know that:
There are literally thousands of commercial fishing companies in Alaska that are always looking for new employees. Several companies will give you room and board for free and pay for your round-trip airfare from Seattle, WA to Alaska. Average monthly earnings range from $2,000 to $10,000.
English teachers are in high demand around the world. Institutes and private individuals will pay you just for showing people something that you already know. Usually, no special certificates are required (you don’t even need to speak the local language), and you can make $200 a day by teaching English as a foreign language. Teach in Tailand, Japan, Brazil – wherever.
In many parts of the world you can buy valuable items cheaply and sell them elsewhere for large profits. (Gold jewelry could cost you $100, you sell it for $1,000, earing you a profit of $900). One of the best ways to sell these items is through online auctions like eBay – and if you do it right you’ll be able to run your auction business from anywhere in the world.
There are humanitarian organizations, like the Peace Corps, that pay for your room and board, and give you a monthly income. You’ll be able to travel to foreign lands, help people, and get paid for it.
You can make money from your travel and vacation photographs. There are several places online (check out Shutterstock.com and iStock.com) where you can post your pictures. Every single time one of your pictures gets downloaded, you earn a commssion. You’ll earn residual income from your picture from anywhere in the world for as long as you like. Imagine how much you could earn each month with 1,000 pictures posted on several different sites.
Countless websites, magazines, newspapers and trade journals want your travel stories. When you write about your travel experiences these publications pay you for it. Also, when you show restaurants, tour agencies and hotels your writing credentials, they will often give you a big discount on their services.
During the summer months, wildfires start in mountainous and desert areas. They threaten forests, wildlife and homes. The people that fight these fires get room, board and travel expenses paid for. Besides the hourly-wage, firefighters can get paid extra for hazards, overtime and time and a half. Wildland firefighters consistently make thousands of dollars every week.
I could go on, but I think you get the idea. There are so many exciting, adventurous and fun opportunities available that there is no reason why you should stay at a job you hate.
Life should be an adventure. There are scores of adventurous job opportunities waiting for you to take advantage of them. So why wait? Get started today.

v Ensure that the hotel rooms have reusable and recyclable materials to prevent land pollution.

v Do not carry too much tourist maps and brochures. Pick only the ones that are needed for your desired location.

v Contact the Health Officer if you find a deceased animal along your route. This is necessary so as to prevent an epidermic.

v Obey caution signs found in areas where there is wildlife so as to prevent accident

v Do not throw non-organic garbage on the road when traveling because they could attract animals which can result to accident or act as threat to humans.

v If you wish to renew or obtain your passport, then link to passport offices in your preferred location. For instance, one who wishes to renew or obtain a passport in the United States should locate any of their offices for the necessary information. You can also find out if there are visa requirements for your location.

v Women in their last trimester of pregnancy are not allowed to travel by cruise. This is necessary so as to prevent miscarriage since some of them may have phobia for water bodies.

v A letter of permission is required from a single parent traveling with children from the other partner.

v Do not eat any diet you are not used to so as to avoid stomach upset.

v Have an adequate knowledge on call rates globally so that you would not be cheated unnecessarily.

v You must possess a good traveler fanny pack to keep essential documents such as passports, visa and so on.

v Do things with moderation. For instance, do not take too much alcohol so as to avoid being a victim of assault.

v Always abide by table etiquette in your chosen location. For instance, when eating rice in Japan, do not leave your chopstick standing in a vertical position. It symbolizes death in Japanese culture.

v Consult travel agents who can provide appropriate information on agencies offering discounts on holidays.

Whether you are a new travel enthusiast or old pro, you can make your holidays more interesting and fulfilling by enhancing your experience. Whatever means you choose to embark on your tour, try to get the best out of it.

Between February 1st and May 15th 2007, 10 Caribbean nations will join together in an unprecedented effort to simplify travel restrictions. Inspired by the hosting of the Cricket World Cup – the third largest sporting event in the world – these Caribbean nations will allow visitors to travel between the islands without the hassle of international customs or visas. Furthermore, all 10 nations participating in the Cricket World Cup are located relatively close together, allowing travelers to easily visit several unique destinations in one vacation.
Though the Cricket World Cup is scheduled to run from March 5 to April 28, the additional six weeks of hassle-free travel have been allotted to lure additional tourists to the Caribbean. Therefore, you could even take advantage of this travel agreement in early May – after the Cricket World Cup is completed – and hop between islands for a two-week vacation.
Here is a list of the Caribbean nations you will be able to visit without the normal hassles of international travel:
• Antigua and Barbuda
• Barbados
• Dominica
• Grenada
• Guyana
• Jamaica
• St. Kitts and Nevis
• St. Lucia
• St. Vincent and The Grenadines
• Trinidad and Tobago
Once you arrive at one of the island nations listed above and clear customs, you will then be able to travel to the other nations without any immigration procedures. For those accustomed to traveling between states in the U.S., this may not seem significant. However, considering the stringent travel guidelines put in place at the beginning of year, this agreement is truly a unique opportunity.
Another great aspect of this agreement is that most visitors won’t need to acquire visas for their travel. Residents of the following nations will be allowed to visit any of the 10 countries involved in the Cricket World Cup agreement without a visa:
• United States and Dependent Territories
• United Kingdom and Dependent Territories
• Canada
• France and Dependant Territories
• The Netherlands and Dependant Territories
• Germany
• Spain
• Japan
• Italy
• IrelandSouth Africa
• CARICOM Member Nations (except Haiti)
It is estimated that nearly 95% of the current visitors to these Caribbean nations will be able to travel without visas during this travel window. Even the nations that require a visa for travel will find the process greatly simplified.
Prior to the announcement of this travel assistance program, Caribbean nations banded together for several political and economic reasons. CARICOM, short for “Caribbean Community,” is composed of 15 Caribbean nations devoted to increasing tourism opportunities and activities. Beyond the development of long-term tourism assistance programs, CARICOM will also streamline the visa process during the Cricket World Cup for all visitors from nations not listed above. The visa program will include a special website for applications, a 24-hour hotline for visa assistance, three-day turnarounds for visa requests, waiving of visa fees for children 12 and under and additional preparation for visitor emergencies. As helpful as the CARICOM programs are today for travelers looking to secure a visa, this group of Caribbean nations will only make life easier for all tourists in the years to come.
Most importantly, you don’t need to visit or participate in the Cricket World Cup to take advantage of this travel opportunity. Besides the high-profile cricket matches, the Cricket World Cup will also bring plenty of events to the islands. Though these Caribbean islands are always centers of activity, the Cricket World Cup is certain to draw even more festivals, live music and fine art events.
Whether you are a cricket fan or not, there has never been a better time to visit the Caribbean. Book a flight and get ready to experience these unique and exotic islands for yourself.
