Each year, the Boryeong Mud Festival attracts over 80,000 international visitors, making it Korea’s most popular festival among non-Koreans. Last year it was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism as one of the best festivals in Korea. This year the festival will run for nine days (July 17th – July 25th) at Boryeong City’s Daecheon Beach in Chungcheongnam-do Province. Boryeong mudflats have a high concentration of Germanium and a host of other minerals that are said to be great for the skin. The festival celebrates the famed mud (and the fun of summer vacation!) with a variety of lively events like mud slides, mud wrestling, and mud massages, leaving visitors covered from head-to-toe with “healthy mud.” With festivities running day and night, the Boryeong Mud Party is a fun-packed beach party that’s sure to be the highlight of your summer!

Main Activities

From fun and exciting mud-themed activities, to various forms of mud beauty therapy, there are always plenty of great programs to choose from.

Start your day of mud-covered fun by passing through the Mud-Fog Tunnel at Mud Square where you’ll get the equivalent of a mud shower. Or, visit the ‘mud fountain’ which sprays muddy water at passersby during set times throughout the day. After you’ve had your first dip in the mud, move on to the air-bounce slide or the ‘mud pool slide,’ where you can slide down into a giant pool of mud. Make sure you dive into the fun as soon as you get to the festival grounds; those without any mud on their body may get locked up in ‘mud prison!’

On the roads circling the beach, there are a variety of programs perfect for those looking for a physical challenge. Visitors can ski down tidal flats or even participate in a rigorous simulation of military training, which takes place on a 10km-long obstacle course (scheduled at 11:00, on July 24). Visitors wanting to commemorate their time at the mud festival can make a ceramic item or a festival character out of mud at the event booths. There is also a photo zone where you can take pictures with a mud-covered mannequin.

Must-Do Events

Mud Sunbathing

For those visitors who enjoy sunbathing on the beach, mud pools will be available at the parasol stands along the beach. Spread mud all over your body, wait for about 10 minutes until it dries and turns white, and then wash it off. This is thought to be very good for your skin.

Mud Pool Slide

Dive down the mud-covered slide and plunge into the mud pool at the bottom. If you’re already covered in mud before you take your turn, you’ll go down the slide even faster. There is also a mud pool slide exclusively designed for young children.

Giant Mud bath

Jump in the giant mud bath and join in the mud madness.

Major Auxiliary Events

Take a break from your mud bath to watch the festival parade, the yacht parade, or the performances of the Mud Festival Mascots: Muddori and Mudsuni. A special city bus service is available during the festival, so that visitors can easily travel to the various festival destinations located along the Boryeong Mud

Nighttime Festivities Guide

A grand opening ceremony will take place on the special stage at Mud Plaza, the main venue.

Korea boasts a number of festive holidays. Leading the list is Seollal, or New Year, when people enjoy a bowl of tteokguk (rice cake soup) or play traditional games with their families. On Chuseok, the entire family gathers to enjoy the bounties of the autumn harvest. On Dano, people wear colorful hanboks, ride on swings, and wash their hair in iris-essence water. And there is Sambok, when people eat especially nutritious meals and cool off in a mountain brook during the hottest period of summer.

If you have ever been to Korea or have an interest in the country, you may have heard a little about the holidays of Seollal, Chuseok, and Dano. How about Sambok? The word Sambok may sound unfamiliar to you, but if you want to beat the heat of summer in Korea, then you might want to learn more about it. Here is what Korean people enjoy doing during Sambok.

What is Sambok?

In the past when most Koreans depended on farming for their livelihood, all family members worked in the fields from spring to fall. But when the scalding heat of summer made field work nearly impossible, everyone would take a short respite from the sizzling sun. Part of this summertime ritual was eating a carefully prepared, nutritious meal meant to build stamina and cool the body: a wise and easy way to recover from fatigue and gear up for the fall harvest.

Sambok refers to the three hottest days of summer, which mark the peak of the growing season. After these days have passed, farmers look forward to the ripening of the rice. According to the lunar calendar, the sambok period extends over a month and is marked by the three days of chobok (beginning), jungbok (middle), and malbok (last). There is a 10-day interval between chobok and jungbok, and a 20-day interval between jungbok and malbok. This year, chobok is July 20, jungbok is July 30, and malbok is August 9 after the monsoon season (June 10, 20, and July 10 respectively by the lunar calendar). And since Sambok is counted according to the lunar calendar, the days are different every year.

What Do People Do on Sambok Days?

In the past, Sambok was a holiday for farmers worn out by farming chores. During the dynastic period, the royal court distributed ice from the palace icehouse to its high-ranking officials. In those days, however, ice was a rarity for the common people. So, when the heat of summer made it impossible to work the land, people did chores instead, or took a few days off to go to a cooler place.

Usually, people took refuge in a nearby mountain valley or at the seacoast. Such trips were mostly common among housewives. They would flee from labor and spend a leisurely cool summer vacation, enjoying a footbath in a cold mountain brook or a sand bath on the beach. This was also a time for them to visit their parents and family members.

Nowadays, there are no special sambok traditions, but people still continue the custom of eating nutritious and rejuvenating foods, which is why you’ll find a long line of customers waiting to be seated at samgyetang or other sambok-special restaurants.

Korean’s Favorite Sambok Meals!

Koreans are most interested in foods that help restore stamina weakened by the scorching heat, and the most popular are samgyetang (chicken ginseng soup) andjangeogui (grilled eel). According to Eastern medicine, blood concentrates near the skin in hot weather in order to cool the body, and this may lead to bad blood circulation in the stomach and muscles. For this reason, it is not uncommon to lose one’s appetite or feel exhausted in summer.

On those days, people will want to eat foods that warm the body. For example, chicken, the main ingredient in samgyetang, warms the body, and ginseng too promotes heat in the body. One might ask: why eat hot foods when the weather is already so hot? From ancient times, the custom was based on the Oriental medicinal theory that even though there is heat in the body, the internal organs are relatively cold. It was believed that by warming up the inner body, not only would one overcome summer heat, it would also prevent illness and fatigue. And because poor nutrition reduced energy, which could ultimately lead to a bad harvest, people usually prepared nutritious and energizing meals on sambok days. It addition to samgyetang, people also eat jangeogui (broiled eel), patjuk (red bean porridge), or summer fruits like melon.

Samgyetang – The Most Popular Sambok Dish

Samgyetang, the most popular Korean dish for sambok days, is prepared with a tender young chicken (one small chicken each for individual servings), ginseng, garlic, jujube dates, and glutinous rice.

In addition to samgyetang, you can also try the chogyetang (cold noodles with chicken) or yukgaejang (spicy beef soup), which are made from chicken. It is said that a hot meal that induces perspiration has more health benefits than a cold meal in summer.

Patjuk Drives Away Spirits, So Why Not Heat?

Patjuk, red bean gruel, is eaten not only on sambok days, but also on Dongji (winter solstice). Ancient records show that because the color red was avoided by evil spirits, people threw red beans at the front gate of their home or ate red bean porridge to drive away evil spirits. For this reason, it is customary for Koreans to make patjuk in hopes of bringing peace and health to the family. In some regions especially, people have long believed that eating patjuk on sambok days helps drive away heat and illness, so it has become customary to make patjuk. A sweet tasting legume, red beans are rich in protein, fat, fiber, and vitamin B1, and help relieve swelling.

Chueotang and Jangeogui Make for Younger-Looking Skin

Rich in vitamin A and E, jangeo, or eel, stimulates blood circulation and helps prevent ageing and wrinkles. Freshwater eel or mudfish has 200 times the vitamin A in beef. Eel is known to be effective for people suffering from rheumatism, pneumonia, or osteoporosis. In Korea, grilled eel is especially popular among men, as it is believed to be an aphrodisiac thanks to the eel’s rich content in zinc. Other natural foods rich in zinc are oysters and abalone, and it is said that the legendary libertine Casanova never forgot to eat 50 oysters a day. Moreover, because of its high retinol content that helps prevent wrinkles and ageing, eel is also widely enjoyed by women.

BARGAIN SHOPPING IN GANGBUK AREA

Namdaemun Market, which has been around for over 600 years, is a place for people to purchase various types of products at bargain prices. Within walking distance of the market is Myeong-dong, the busiest shopping district in Seoul. Because of its convenient location and popularity among international travelers, the Namdaemun Market and Myeongdong district have together become an international center for shopping. The Dongdaemun Market offers a totally different scene from Namdaemun: open from evening till dawn, the market offers a unique shopping experience unfound anywhere else. Here, visitors will find both local markets and large shopping malls where they can buy anything from fabric and lace to ready-made clothing and accessories.

Namdaemun Market

The largest market in Korea, with 600 years of history

Opened in 1964, the Namdaemun Market is the largest traditional market in Korea with various goods in store. All products are sold at affordable prices and the stores in this area also function as a wholesale market.

Most of the goods are made directly by the storeowners. Namdaemun Market opens from 11:00pm to 3:00am, and is crowded with retailers from all over the country. When day breaks, the site of busy Koreans bustling around th market, creates a unique scene that attracts tourists worldwide. The Namdaemun Market sells a variety of clothes, glasses, kitchenware, toys, mountain gear, fishing equipment, stationary, fine arts, accessories, hats, carpets, flowers, ginseng and imported goods.

Myeong-dong

Myeong-dong is a massive shopping district. Myeong-dong Street is around 1km long and extends from Myeong-dong Subway Station (Seoul Subway Line No. 4) to Lotte Department Store at Euljiro. All kinds of brand name shops and department stores are clustered along the streets and alleyways. You can purchase various products such as clothes, shoes, and accessories. Compared to Namdaemun or Dongdaemun, many good-quality brands are sold in Myeong-dong. Such stores include Lotte Department Store, Shinsegae Department Store, Myeong-dong Migliore, Noon Square and M Plaza. You can purchase good-quality products at the department stores or other fashionable products at reasonable prices at Migliore or Myeong-dong Clothes.. Moreover, all kinds of brand shops are densely located along the main street and lanes.

Myeong-dong also has family restaurants, fast food, and Korean, Western and Japanese food. Many restaurants in Myeong-dong specialize in pork cutlet and kalguksu (noodles). Other than restaurants, there are many convenient facilities such as hair salons, banks and theaters. Myeong-dong Catholic Church is also a famous tourist attraction. It is the first and main church ofCatholicism in Korea and was built in the Gothic style. Behind the church is a space where you can relax from long hours of touring.

Dongdaemun Market

The Dongdaemun Shopping Complex is one of Korea’s most representative markets and was founded on December 23, 1970 as the largest of its kind in Asia. In December in 1985, the Dongdaemun Shopping Town was established, and now the area encompasses five buildings in total (A, B, C, D and the Shopping Town). There are over 5,000 shops located in this district, selling various fabrics, materials, accessories, wedding products, and more. The fabric and clothing here are of the latest fashion trends in the world. Inventory is imported and exported in real time, making Dongdaemun a must-visit fashion market for everyone.

HIGH-END SHOPPING IN GANGNAM AREA

The Gangnam area is usually associated with high-end shopping. The districts of Sinsa-dong, Apgujeong-dong, and Cheongdam-dong are lined with designer brand fashion stores catering to the rich and famous. Garosugil in Sinsa-dong has a distinct, trendy ambience and is lined with charming cafés, restaurants, stores, and galleries. It is a great place to shop or just take a walk and look around. The fashion streets in Rodeo, Apgujeong-dong cater to those who are very serious about fashion and beauty. The area is lined with department stores featuring luxury designer brands and famous local and international designer shops. With luck, visitors can even spot Korean celebrities shopping in the area.

Sinsa-dong Garosugil Street

As the Korean name implies (Garosugil means “tree-lined street”), this street is famous for the trees, which line both sides of the 700m-long promenade. In summer, the trees’ luscious green leaves provide welcome shade for shoppers, and in autumn these ginkgo trees turn golden. This sophisticated, up-and-coming street is flanked with all sorts of trendy shops and European-style cafes. You can stroll along shopping at your own leisurely pace and then relax on café terraces with coffee and a tasty desert.

Apgujeong Rodeo Street

The center for the latest fashion trends, luxury designer brands, and hair shops

Apgujeong Rodeo Street is the leading fashion mecca, formed as a cultural zone with a high propensity for consumption. It creates leading fashion trends, customer friendly shops, foreign brand name shops with high-quality goods, reasonably priced hip hop fashion shops, and accessory shops. There are many cafes with unique interior designs, as well as many Korean, Thai and Japanese restaurants. Beauty clinics are clustered on the streets and due to this atmosphere, Rodeo Street attracts many youngsters.

Recently, many theaters have moved from Chungmuro to the vicinity of “Rodeo Street,” which is emerging as a new theater space as well. Along with the opening of Multi-Plex Cine-City, more theaters such as Cinehouse, Cineplus, and Nanta Theater (non-speaking performances) have moved into the area, and it is now a full-blown cultural zone for youngsters. If you get lucky, you may meet famous Korean celebrities as they make frequent visits to the area.

COEX Mall

COEX Mall is the largest underground shopping center in Asia. It is located in the basement of the Korea World Trade Center, located in Samseong-dong in the Gangnam-gu area of Seoul. The colossal shopping center stretches from Samseong station (subway line 2) in the south all the way to Bongeunsa temple in the north, and is considered to be the best shopping and entertainment complex in the area.

The complex’s entertaining design takes the theme of Water Journey, and its main route is divided into the Summit Walk, Forest Walk, Lake Walk, Waterfall Walk, Canyon Walk, Riverside Walk, Tropic Walk and Ocean Walk. Despite the complex’s huge size, visitors need not worry about getting lost. By simply following the main route you will reach most parts of the complex, and there are also signs in English.

Along the main route, visitors will find the Lake food court with 16 restaurants (Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Western-style), the event court (where concerts and performances are staged), the Bandi & Luni’s bookstore (where you can find English books on Korean culture and history), and plenty of brand name stores. Visitors can find major international brands of leisure and sports clothing in a section of COEX mall that is operated by Hyundai Department Store.

There are also plenty of attractions for those visitors looking for a break from shopping. The Game Champ video arcade has 100 of the latest game devices, while the Megabox Cineplex has 16 theaters screening a wide selection of movies. Other popular attractions include the COEX Aquarium, with its water tunnel, and the Kimchi Museum, where visitors can learn everything they need to know about Korea’s favorite food, and even try some of it.

To celebrate the completion of its new website, the Korea Tourism Organization has come up with an list of heralded travel destinations exclusively for visitors. Due in large part to Korea’s beautiful, rolling mountains, surrounding oceans and myriad cultural & historical sites, the flow of tourists to the country is steadily growing. If you do not want to miss out on any must-see places or must-do activities, be sure to include Korea’s top 10 tourist destinations in your itinerary.

No.1 Traditional Market Tour (Namdaemun Market, Dongdaemun Market, Myeong-dong and Insa-dong)

As a time-honored traditional haven, Namdaemun Market makes for an ideal place to soak in the shopping scene with its unlimited street-vendors, and myriad restaurants. If it’s the latest fashion trends you’re after, Dongdaemun Market never sleeps, greeting shoppers from 10am to as late as 5am the following morning. The area is bustling with energetic Koreans even at dawn. Myeong-dong, which was rated the number-one destination visited by foreign tourists, is crowded with people all year round.

It has a longstanding reputation for attracting the young and fashionable aficionados. The cozy, narrow streets of Insa-dong are lined with antique shops selling old-fashioned books, paintings and ceramics. The many elusive alleyways boast a variety of teahouses serving traditional teas and eateries selling bindaeddeok (Korean-style pancakes) and makgeolli (rice wine).

In particular, Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, which have both been designated World Cultural Heritage Sites by UNESCO, are must-see destinations.

Seokguram Grotto is a dome-shaped stone cave made from some 360 granite plates. The marveling construction of Seokguram Grotto, built with unprecedented precision, features a gem on the forehead of the beautiful and magnificent Buddha statue and is an incredible sight to behold at sunrise.

No.3 DMZ-Tour

The DMZ is a place where you can see the truce line that separates Korea into south and north, making it the only divided country in the world. As public access to the DMZ is strictly restricted and the area is guarded by both South and North Korean soldiers, the DMZ remains a virtually undisturbed zone. Therefore, rare plants and animals are often spotted there. You can also see stern guards defending their respective territories at the Panmunjeom security posts. You may even get a glimpse of North Korean residents through a telescope at any number of observatories.

No.4 Busan’s Haeundae Beach and Jagalchi Market Tour

Busan, a beautiful port city on the Korean Peninsula surrounded on three sides by ocean, features perfect harmony between vast sandy beaches and coastline. Haeundae Beach is considered a landmark in Busan as it is frequented by international and Korean tourists alike, particularly during the summer vacation season.
The Jeju tour offers a number of places to appreciate the mystery and beauty of nature. There is a legend about Baekrokdam Lake at Hallasan Mountain where wizards are said to have frolicked here. And though the Geomun Oreum lava caves were created a long time ago, their inner structures are well preserved and lava pillars show traces of where lava onced flowed. Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak (Sunrise Peak) is a perfect spot to watch the magnificent view of the sun rising over the sea cliffs at dawn.

No.6 Tradition Experience Tour (Andong Hahoe Village & Korea Folk Village)

Are you interested in the lifestyle of ancient Koreans? If so, be sure to check out both Andong Hahoe Village and Korea Folk Village. You can learn about the old homes, traditional games and folk culture of Korean ancestors all in one place.

The ancient houses at Hahoe Village are traditional Korean-style houses that are thousands of years old. More surprisingly, they are still inhabited by people today. There is a program that gives tourists a chance to spend a night in one of the houses. The Hohoe Byeolsingut Exorcism, which has been designated an important intangible cultural asset, is staged at 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday from March through November. Admission is free.

No.7 Korea Buddhist Temple Tour (Haeinsa Temple, Tongdosa Temple, Songgwangsa Temple, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple)

Korea’s Buddhist temples are located deep within mountains, and are in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature. Haeinsa Temple, located at Gaya Mountain, is one of three major Buddhist temples in Korea. is home to Tripitaka Koreana, a national treasure created to protect the country from foreign invasion.

Tongdosa Temple is famous for not having any Buddhist statues in the temple. However, you must stop by its main building, which have sarira (marble-shaped relics retrieved after cremating Buddha) enshrined in the place of a Buddha statue. Nicknamed “a prison in heaven,”

Songgwangsa Temple means “a rest area for clouds and winds.” It is an ideal spot to relax body and mind. Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is a temple frequented by tourists visiting Busan. It features picturesque scenery as it towers over the ocean. It offers many other attractions, including a dragon-shaped stone sculpture, Korea’s largest Buddha statue, and a wishing rock.

No.8 Famous Mountain Tour (Seoraksan Mountain, Jirisan Mountain, Geumgangsan Mountain)

A mountain climber was once asked, “Why do you climb a mountain?” and he answered, “Because there is a mountain.”Korea is a perfect place for such an enthusiast as the majority of its landscape is covered with mountains. In addition to a sense of accomplishment upon conquering their peaks, Seoraksan Mountain, Jirisan Mountain and Geumgangsan Mountain offer the pleasure of a beautiful nature experience.

Seoraksan Mountain has a number of peaks and valleys, including Korea’s third-highest peak, Hangyeryeong. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is home to diverse species of plants and animals.

The origins of the name of Jirisan Mountain, Korea’s first national park, lead to a popular belief that the mountain has the power to turn a foolish person wise. Though it is famous for its steep and towering peaks, it is also good for family climbers as there are various paths on the mountain.

Geumgangsan Mountain, located in North Korea, commands a unique view in each season, and so it has a different name for each season: Geumgangsan Mountain, Bongraesan Mountain, Pungaksan Mountain and Gaegolsan Mountain. You will need to sign up for a package tour to visit Geumgangsan Mountain. Among four different courses, all of which feature the seasonal beauty of Geumgangsan Mountain, Guryongyeon Falls is not to be missed.

No.9 Ancient Palace Tour (Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Deoksugung Palace)

Built during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), Gyeongbokgung Palace is recognized as the finest among the five major palaces. As a main palace representing the Joseon dynasty, it was a residence for royal families and a place where official ceremonies and rituals were held. It is a famous destination and a favorite among foreign tourists who visit Seoul.

Changdeokgung Palace is a secondary palace built after Gyeongbokgung. Its original form is the best preserved of all the royal palaces of the Joseon dynasty. Its rear garden with its harmony of nature and man-made structures is known for its tremendous beauty. Untouched natural settings and pavilions create a garden that is truly fit for a royal king.

Deoksugung is a royal palace where King Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon dynasty, lived until his final days. Especially famous are Seokjojeon, which hosted foreign envoys, and the stonewall path that has a superstitious belief associated with it that lovers who walk along the wall together will break up.

Day 1: Seoul, A Metropolitan City where Traditional and Modernity Coexist

The itinerary for a one-day tour was created based on places approved by many tourists over the years. But there is still much more to see and enjoy in Seoul. So, this is the day that you can’t afford to miss!

The National Folk Museum of Korea

Located inside the beautiful Gyeongbokgung Palace, one of the largest Joseon Dynasty palaces, is a museum, which helps foreigners to understand Korean culture and Korean lifestyle. You will discover the characteristics unique to Korea compared to those of neighboring East Asian countries such as China and Japan.

Changdeokgung Palace, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Built in 1405, Changdeokgung Palace is best known for its informal design in the architectural history of East Asian palaces. Named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the palace consists of buildings ideally located so as to be in harmony with the surrounding environment. Huwon, the serene Secret Garden located toward the rear of the palace, represents the very essence of Asian style landscapes.

Insa-dong, Mecca of Korean Traditional Culture

Located less than a 10-minute walk from Changdeokgung Palace, Insa-dong is famous for streets filled with the flavors of tradition and is universally well-loved by tourists. Here, foreigners can purchase traditional souvenirs at low prices and taste authentic dishes by stepping into a Korean restaurant found on every street corner.

N Seoul Tower

A panoramic view of the entire city unfolds before you here. As a dating spot where you can enjoy dinner while appreciating the view of the Han River and the city’s colorful night lights, it is popular not only among those visiting Korea but also with young Koreans.

Day 2: Sokcho, Gateway to Beautiful Beaches and Mountains

Popular among tourists, Sokcho takes pride in its clean beaches and its beautiful Mt. Seoraksan. Fishing is a major industry, which means fresh seafood is abundant. Visitors can also taste local dishes including soft tofu and squid sausage, made with the famous squid caught in the East Sea. Many hotels and short-leased condos are located near Mt. Seoraksan, and reasonably-priced lodging with ocean views can be found along the shorefront.

Sokcho Beach

Sokcho Beach is well-known for its clean waters, fine sands and pine trees framing it all in the background. The tall pines surrounding the beach emit a pleasant aroma, making the beach ideal for tanning with an “aromatic forest” scent. Since the water is not deep and slopes down gently, the beach attracts many visitors during the summer.

Also, Abai Village, which is only a 15-minute walk from the beach, is famous as the site where the drama A Autumn in My Heart, was filmed. You can visit the store owned by Eun-seo’s (played by Song Hye-gyo) mother, ride the skiffs that actors were filmed in, and stroll along Cheonghodong’s White Sand Beach, one of the drama’s backdrops. The village is about a 5 minute drive from Sokcho Beach. (Though a short distance, it’s not easy to reach by foot; therefore, a taxi is recommended. Taxi fare costs about 3,000 won).

Mt. Seoraksan’s Cable Car

If your time is limited but you still want to experience just how magnificent Mount Seoraksan is, it is highly recommended to take a cable car. As the cable car climbs its way up the mountain, you can view the grand Buddha statue at Sinheungsa Temple and the rocky cliff of Gwongeumseong. In autumn, the brilliant mountain foliage is sure to leave you breathless.

Seorak Waterpia

Seorak Waterpia at Hanhwa Resort is a hot springs theme park that utilizes the natural mineral waters from the local area. Visitors can soak in a hot-spring bath and also enjoy exciting water rides. In particular, the “rafting slider,” in which you descend down a slide on a mat from a height of 20 meters, and the “body slider,” which allows riders to slide down without equipment using your body, are both popular and lines are relatively short.

Day 3: Andong, a Journey into the Past

Traces of distinguished scholars of the past can be felt in Andong, a town of nobility. Cultural heritage is preserved in many forms such as the seowon (memorial hall), old-style homes, and traditional performances such as the Hahoe mask dance drama. The area acquired a measure of fame after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1999. Visitors can also enjoy authentic local cuisine including heotjesabab (a memorial service meal) or gangodeungeo (marinated mackerel) as well as try the local liquor, Andong soju.
There are a number of accommodations including hotels and motels that can be found near the Andong train station. However, for a taste of traditional living you may wish to spend the night in a countryside home.

Andong Hahoe Village

Hahoe Village makes a fine place to delve into the traditional culture of Korea because the old courtyard homes from the Joseon era and the Hahoe mask dance drama are both well-preserved. In the village, you will find Namchon-daek and Bukchon-daek, which represent the homes of the gentry. It’s also interesting to visit the Samshin-dang area, home to a 600-year-old zelkova tree. There is a local belief that mistreating this tree can bring misfortune. Visitors can write a wish on a paper and hang it from one of the strings that surround the tree for good luck.
From March to November, the mask dance performance known as “Hahoe byeolsingut talchum” is held at the village’s folklore preservation center (schedule varies by season), and from summer until winter one can take part in the harvest by picking melons and other produce.

Byeongsan Seowon (Confucian School)

As its name describes, Byeongsan seowon is a beautiful seowon, or memorial hall, lined up against a mountain that spreads out like a folding screen. From the top of the Mandaeru Pavilion, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the surroundings, while from Ibgyodang a scene of the memorial hall exquisitely set across the backdrop of nature can be appreciated.
It is especially lovely in the fall when the colorful autumn foliage is at its peak, and in winter when the rocky cliffs become more prominent. However, many visitors come to see Byeonsan Seowon in summer to relax and enjoy the refreshing cool breeze by the river. Visitors can also stroll down the sandy path along the stream flowing in front of the memorial hall.

Day 4: Gyeongju, Roofless Museum – World Heritage

Often referred to as a “museum without a roof,” Gyeongju is the ancient capital of the thousand year-long Silla Dynasty, and the history and remains from that period can still be seen. With cultural heritage spread throughout the city, Gyeongju possesses a subtle yet awesome combination of modern structures and ancient relics. It’s also a great place for a bike tour. (Bike rental shops can be found near Gyeongju Bus Terminal, the train station and Daeneungwon. A one-day rental costs about 18,000 won.)
A range of lodgings including hotels, are located in and around the Bomun tourist district, and visitors can also enjoy authentic local cuisine including soft bean paste-filled hwangnamppang; gyodong beopju, a liquor with a unique aroma; and Gyeongju ssambab, a rice dish made with seasonal ingredients.

Cheonmachong Tomb (Daeneungwon)

One of the 23 tombs that belong to Daeneungwon, the largest group of ancient mounds found in Gyeongju, Cheonmachong is the only tomb where visitors are allowed inside. Among the many other attractions in Daeneungwon are: Michu Wangneung, used as a ritual hall in times of national crisis, and Hwangnam Daechong, referred to as the twin tombs. Daeneungwon is especially beautiful at twilight with the sun setting in the background.

Anapji (Imhaejeongji)

Anapji, the largest man-made pond dating back to the Silla era, was built with a curved shape, so it’s difficult to view the entire pond from any single location. This makes the pond seem infinitely long and wide, but what’s more interesting is that its shape appears to change depending on where one is standing. So it’s intriguing to circle the pond entirely; a stroll which takes about 30 minutes. Also, because the pavilion and the pond look mysterious under the twilight, many people prefer to visit here in the evening. In summer, the full lotus blossoms create quite a spectacle.

Bulguksa Temple

Situated on the slopes of Mt. Tohamsan, Bulguksa Temple is famous as a structure embodying Buddhist beliefs. For instance, the two stone pagodas that stand before Daeungjeon, the simple yet graceful Seokgatap and the highly ornate Dabotop, represent the yin and yang, respectively. Dabotop pagoda is engraved on Korea’s 10-won coin.

Seokguram Grotto

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site together with Bulguksa in 1995, the Seokguram grotto temple is shaped by hundreds of granite stones with soil plastered on the outer layer to make it resemble a natural cave. The man-made grotto contains mysteries that modern science has yet to solve including humidity control and control of the angle of light falling into the main chamber where the Buddha is located. If you visit before dawn you can appreciate a surprisingly beautiful sunrise.

Day 5: Temple Stay at Haeinsa

Hapcheon is a town where Mt. Gayasan and Haeinsa Temple blend together in harmony. This temple is where Palman Daejanggyeong (Tripitaka Koreana) is kept. Visitors can enjoy sanchae jeongsik, a local vegetable dish, and a traditional temple meal at Haeinsa as well as famous regional cuisine made from Korean-grown beef and pork. Although lodging can be found near Gayasan National Park, if you are interested in experiencing Buddhist temple life, it is recommended to stay at Haeinsa.

Haeinsa Temple (Temple Stay)

A Temple Stay at Haeinsa presents a variety of activities; making lotus lamps is especially popular. If you are interested in a Temple Stay, you may want to check the dates of the Palman Daejanggyeong Festival (this festival was held during October in 2006.) in advance. Held in connection with the Haeinsa Temple Stay, the festival provides a great opportunity to experience Korea’s traditional printing methods firsthand. During the festival, visitors can enjoy such events as a re-enactment of the exchange of the Tripitaka Koreana from Ganghwa-do Island to Haeinsa Temple during the early Joseon period.

Day 6: Geoje-do, an Island Where Nature Prevails

In addition to Geoje-do, Korea’s second largest island after Jeju-do, Geoje city consists of 10 inhabited and 52 uninhabited isles. It is the islands that draw tourists: Each is unique in a different way with splendid natural scenery. The local tastes include gorosoe yaksu (a type of mineral water), maengjong juksun duruchigi (bamboo shoot stir-fry) and gulgukbab (oyster soup with rice).

Oe-do Island Paradise

Surrounded by rocky cliffs, this island entered the public eye after a couple transformed the entire island into a beautiful garden. The Venus Garden, where a statue of Venus is located, is a famous attraction on Oedo Island Paradise. Lee’s House, where the final film shoot for the popular drama “Winter Sonata” took place, is famous as a photo spot.

Since boats do not operate in inclement weather you may want to check the schedule of boats traveling to the island during rainy or stormy periods. Visitors are allowed to tour the island for 90 minutes.

Day 7: Busan, a City with Diverse Festivals and Attractions

The country’s second largest city and largest port, Busan offers many attractions as well as festivals. Its beaches are especially popular in summer because of their size and good water quality. Besides seafood, Haeundae galbi (beef ribs) is another famous local dish. A good choice of lodging is found along the beachfront.

Jagalchi Market

Korea’s biggest seafood market, Jagalchi Market is always noisy, filled with Busan’s local accent haggling over prices. At the same time, it’s where visitors can witness the peculiar “jeong” of Korea from merchants who give customers extra or accept less money for their products. Around October each year, the market hosts the Busan Jagalchi Festival filled with all kinds of seafood to see, taste and buy.

Haeundae Beach

Haeundae Beach gets crowded in summer, for the water is shallow and there is hardly any tidal change. The beach’s white sands don’t stick to your body, and the beach has earned a measure of fame for the sunrise over the horizon and the moonrise view from Haewoljeong Pavilion.

Day 8: Damyang, a Town Offering Aromatic ‘Forest Bathing’ amid the Bamboo

Set in a region long regarded as famous for its bamboo groves, Damyang has many attractions and offers many kinds of souvenirs made from bamboo. Especially in summer, visitors can find abundant groves of green bamboo and also enjoy a healthy “forest bath” beneath the towering bamboo stalks. Authentic local cuisine includes tteokgalbi (seasoned rib steak), juksunhoe (bamboo shoots and squid seasoned with condiments) and daetongbab (rice cooked in bamboo).

Soswaewon

Soswaewon is a private garden from the Joseon period where nature and art coexist in harmony. Upon entering the garden, one passes along a walkway through thick bamboo groves, eventually reaching Daebongdae Pavilion. From the deck of the pavilion, you will be able to see a full view of Soswaewon entirely. The garden is uniquely arranged in that the water flowing down from the north passes beneath the fence. Also, the view of the garden from Gwangpunggak Pavilion is a worthwhile visit.

Jungnogwon

At Jungnogwon one can enjoy an aromatic “forest bath” while listening to the crisp sound of bamboo leaves falling. The park consists of eight paths, each with a different theme and a unique atmosphere. Pavilions and benches are located along the paths, encouraging visitors to relax and enjoy the forest tranquility. While it’s wonderful in spring with bamboo sprouts appearing everywhere, summer is definitely the most gorgeous season with bamboo at their greenest. Other attractions near Jungnogwon include Gwanbangjerim, a special man-made forest cultivated to improve the water quality of Damyangcheon Stream.

Day 9: Cultural Tour of Suncheon Aboard a Bus

With many well-maintained cultural sites nearby, Suncheon makes an ideal place to explore and learn about Korean culture. Near to Boseong, famous for its green tea plantation, and Beolgyo, a town well-known for its kkomak, cockle-shelled mollusk, Suncheon offers many special types of Korean cuisine as well as related events such as the Namdo Culinary Festival. As for lodging, hotels and motels are found around Suncheon Station while private homestays are available at the Naganeupseong Folk Village.

Seonamsa

A beautiful temple located on the slopes of Mt. Jogyesan, Seonamsa has produced a number of distinguished Buddhist monks, and even nowadays, many monks meditate in the temple’s Gangwon and Seonwon. In and around the temple, visitors can find chestnut, maple and camellia trees that are over a hundred years old, which together create impressive autumn colors. In spring, green sprouts and colorful seasonal flowers offer a splendid sight. Oddly enough, another must-see temple site is its restroom. This traditional restroom is uniquely structured to accommodate three people at a time.

Naganeupseong Folk Village

What makes Naganeupseong Folk Village special is not the well-preserved thatch-roofed houses, but the fact that families continue to live in them. On weekends and holidays, a changing-of-the-guard ceremony (dating back to the old days when they protected the fortress) can be seen, and traditional folk games are offered for visitors to experience. From the highest point of Naganeupseong’s fortress walls, you can obtain a panoramic view of the town, and there’s also Mt. Geumjeonsan (“golden money”) in front, which is said to make a person rich when they stare at it. The mountain is especially beautiful at twilight because of how the sunlight strikes the rocky western part of the peak. If you are interested in experiencing the local village lifestyle, you may stay at one of the private homes offering overnight accommodation.

Suncheonman Bay

Famous for its coastal plains and fields of reeds, Suncheonman Bay is a place to take a look at rare bird species from around the world. There are interesting attractions year-around; thick fog in spring, jjangttungeo (a rare type of goby fish) and the coastal plains in summer, reeds in autumn and some 200 kinds of migrating birds including the hooded crane in winter. But, the bay is especially beautiful in fall when the Reed Festival is held and in winter when groups of dancing birds can be seen. The S-shaped waterway in the bay is famous for creating a splendid glow at sunset.
If you want an up-close experience of the natural environment around the bay, a tour by boat or bicycle is recommended. A boat tour can bring you to just about any corner of the bay, and while onboard you can also enjoy a hot drink as well as ocean fishing. Fishing equipment can be rented at no extra charge.

Day 10: Jeju, the Country’s Hottest Vacation Destination – Home to Natural Wonders and a Distinct Culture

The country’s leading tourist destination, Jeju Island is the ideal vacation region where natural wonders and unique cultural traditions can be experienced all at once. With a mild year-round climate, the island offers an exotic natural environment as well as diverse attractions, making it an ideal place to tour and relax. Among the local specialty dishes are okdom (sea bream), heukdwaeji samgyeopsal (a kind of grilled bacon) and hallabong, a type of tangerine. Many luxury hotels including Hotel Shilla Jeju, the Hyatt Regency Jeju and Hotel Lotte Jeju, are located in and around Jungmun Resort where affordable lodging can also be found.

Jungmun Resort

As the largest tourist complex in the country, Jungmun Resort attracts visitors during all four seasons, thanks to the region’s mild year-round climate as well as the many hotels and the diversity of amusements and facilities found here. They include Pacific Land, which offers a dolphin show and a chimpanzee show; the Teddy Bear Museum, the largest of its kind in the world, and the popular Yeomiji Botanical Garden, which has the world’s largest glass greenhouse and a wide selection of rare plants.

Jusangjeolli Cliffs

Located along Daepo Beach at Jungmun, Jusangjeolli consists of multifaceted stone pillars in the shapes of various sized cubes or hexagons, that were formed when cooling lava from Mt. Hallasan flowed into the sea. From rough-surfaced columns resembling raw ore to stylish and exquisite pillars that seem to have been sculpted by an artist, the Jusangjeolli cliffs feature layered columns that some say resemble a black-and-white painting created by a god. When the tide is high, waves can soar tens of meters high as they crash against the columns, creating a magnificent spectacle.

Day 11: Jeju, Korea’s Ideal Getaway

Seongsan Ilchulbong

Seongsan Ilchulbong or Sunrise Peak, was named after its shape – with rocks surrounding this ancient volcanic crater formed by an underwater volcanic eruption, it looks like a castle (“seong”) from a distance. If you climb up into the crater, about a 20 to 30 minute hike from the ticket office, you can enjoy superb views of Mt. Hallasan, which changes colors by season. The beautiful coastline and small villages form into pockets along the coast. But most of all, don’t miss the sunrise from the peak, which is so magnificent it’s been ranked best of the “10 sights of Yeongju” (the old name of Jeju). Bear in mind that fog and clouds sometimes block the view, so be sure to check the weather forecast in advance.

Seongeup Folk Village

Because it is rich in cultural heritage such as Jeju folk music, dol hareubang (“old grandfather” stone statues believed to protect people against demons) and yeonjamae (horse-driven stone mills), along with traditional homes, the entire village of Seongeup-ri has been designated as an Important Folk Heritage. Another must-see attraction is tongsi, a traditional Jeju outhouse with a built-in pig pen for human waste disposal. Though it doesn’t remain in actual use today, it’s fun to visit the exhibit since it shows how they were used in the old days.

North Korea is found in north Asia and shares a border with the People’s Republic of China and Republic of Korea. The two Koreas have ended in a cease fire during the Korean War inside the 50s, therefore technically leaving both countries inside of a state of war. Whilst the armed conflict continues to be a matter of the past, tension within the two Koreas periodically rise thanks to border incidents. The two countries have spent considerable efforts in reconciliation and unification in the past decade. North Korea all the same, is less developed than South Korea.

Western visits to North Korea have recently been allowed and state sponsored tourism has begun. Despite the internal propaganda of North Korea against western nations from the past number of decades the opening of North Korea to tourism is a clear change in their policy.

Tourist visits to North Korea are exclusive inside a sense that all visitors must be followed by a North Korean guide at all times. There is markedly little or no interaction with locals in any from the destinations. Despite these oddities North Korea has become a fashionable place to go for Chinese and Russian vacationers. North Korean vacations are specially well-known inside Russian market due to the warm temperature in North Korea.

Even though the efficient disparity inside two Koreas is extensive, the differences in organic beauty are almost the exact same if not skewed in favor of North Korea. North Korea has maintained most of the historical sites located in their nation. North Korea is also home to awe-inspiring mountain vistas as with Mount Kumgang. Particular regions near the South Korean border like Kaesong have been opened for tourism. Kaseong has even been opened to South Koreans to travel to and has in a very short space of time become a fashionable destination. The strongest point of Korean surroundings are that many of its regions have remained untouched due to the fact the Korean War, this has allowed many places to recoup and maintain their normal beauty undisturbed by industrial or urban expansion.

South Korea is one of the smaller nations in Asia, with a size comparable to the state of Indiana. What it lacks in size it makes up for in abundant culture, turbulent history, exquisite cuisine and a generous and welcoming society.

A Little Background before You Travel to Korea
The Korean peninsula has been literally and figuratively stuck between a rock and a hard place, namely Japan and China, for most of its existence. The region was prosperous under the three kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla during the first four centuries AD until the Mongolians raided the land and built an empire. The 16th century brought the end of the Mongolian Empire and the beginning of a massive game of tug-of-war between China and Japan over the strategic landmass. After World War II Korea finally broke free from Japan, with the USSR managing the North and the United States occupying the South. Today the North and South are two sovereign nations separated by a demilitarized zone. South Korea is officially known as the Republic of Korea (ROK) and commonly referred to simply as Korea.

There’s Still Soul in Seoul
Despite the fact that Seoul was largely burned to the ground during the Korean War (1950-53), the northern part of the capital city is still home to hundreds of spectacular palaces and shrines. The Chosun Dynasty’s Gyeongbokgung Palace is a 5.4 million square foot landmark with a 500-year history and stands among the remaining four palaces in Seoul. Nearly an entire day is necessary to explore the regal palace in all its magnificence. The Jongmyo Royal Shrine is a perfect next stop, as it was where the Chosun Dynasty worshipped. On the first Sunday of May each year a traditional memorial ceremony is held at the Shrine with all the grandeur of the occasion 500 years past.

The southern part of Seoul is the commercial center of the city and boasts a fascinating blend of traditional and hyper-modern architecture. It is also home to World Cup Stadium, intricately weaving shopping streets and even an amusement park, Lotte World. Make sure to visit the city gates, and then venture beyond into the strikingly lush and green landscape to travel Korea more personally.

When to Travel to Korea
Korea has a temperate clime, which results in heavier rain in the summer months (July and August) and a drier winter. Winter is white and snowy all over Korea and the ski season from November to March is extremely popular. There are 13 ski resorts in South Korea alone! After a day on the slopes it is common to relax in one of the many spas with natural hot spring baths. Summer is extremely crowded and very wet in Korea. For milder weather it is best to travel Korea in the spring or fall.

Traveling to South Korea any time of year is sure to be an exciting and rewarding experience, regardless of the weather!
